Elk Valley Herald Reporter
The October 17 council meeting sealed the deal for the lease agreement with new Leisure Centre concession operator, Michele Dwyer of Putter's Grill.

It has been in the works since August and finally, on October 26, residents of Sparwood will be able to enjoy the eats and treats that this long time cook has to offer.

She will be operating both concessions in the Leisure Centre, pool side and arena side. So whether you’re going for a dip or needing a snack for the kids during hockey practice, she'll be there to serve you.

Dwyer has been in the food industry since she was a teenager and has operated her own business for the last couple of years. Many of you may have tried the cuisine at the Sparwood Golf Course throughout the summer months where she has been located, but now we can enjoy Dwyer's passion and hard work year round.

People can expect the usual concession foods such as hamburgers, hotdogs, popcorn, ice cream, milkshakes as well as homemade soups, chilli, homemade buns, muffins, sandwiches, french fries, poutine, onion rings and many more items we will not mention to leave for a delightful surprise.

"My food is fresh, handmade and homemade with real ingredients," says Dwyer. She added, "I'm very excited to be taking on this new adventure and I'm hoping to be able to employ some teenagers soon. I would like to give them a fresh start in the work force and offer them some good basics to cooking and food safety. I hope to offer all of my employees the chance to go and take an online food safety course. If you teach them at the right age, it can really encourage them for their future in the work force."

Dwyer does have a Facebook page that has just been created but hopes to add more information as soon as possible such as the specials on a given week or if she'll be open for certain events.

Dwyer opens on October 26, but is going to have her first pool party to feed the masses on October 27.

"I make all my burgers from fresh ground beef," said Dwyer. "I don't use any filler or preservatives in them, just salt and pepper. I make all my soups from scratch with homemade dinner rolls to go with them and I make my chilli from scratch."

Dwyer discused how she would like to offer the best food she can to the people of Sparwood. "I like real food", she says. "I am so against chain food organizations and I want to see a business in Sparwood that isn't relying on the big companies. We don't know what's in their burgers, they shouldn't taste like cardboard if they are all beef."

Dwyer also purchases her buns and some other supplies from the local Overwaitea so she knows her buns are made fresh everyday. She also does her best to support other local businesses when she can.

Her hours of operation on the pool side concession are from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., Monday to Friday and 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The arena side will be flexible for any events that might be taking place and she will try to keep that side open as much as possible.
Dwyer urges everyone to come down to Putter's Grill to try the great food she has to offer and says she can't wait to serve the residents of the Elk Valley.
